*Read this in black and white with some sad music from the past*
There was a girl, who once could not bake. She had made a few attempts at cakes, but they always end up lopsided and/or burnt.
*Dramatically lifts veil*
Then entered the coronavirus. And you know that trying to shop for longer periods is not all the rave when it comes to buying some bread. So, with all this time, I decide I am going to attempt to make bread. So here I go on a supply run go to the supermarket and I get some yeast and all these nice things, cuz ya girl was going to bake bread.
A few caveats before we begin, I don’t have a mixing bowl and so I used a fork to stir my ingredients to make the dough. Then I kneaded it for about 5-7 minutes by hand.
So, here we go…
- 3 Cups All Purpose Flour
- 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
- 2 Teaspoons Granulated Sugar
- 1 teaspoon of Salt (The original recipe Calle for 1 1/2 tsp but I found the bread to be a little salty so next time I’ll use 1 or even 3/4 tsp)
- 1 1/2 Packets of dry Yeast
- 1 Cup Water (Hot, not boiling)
- Add Yeast to hot water in bowl and stir gently until blended. Let sit for 3 minutes.
- Mix in flour, salt, sugar, and oil to make the dough. (It will be really sticky).
- Keep kneading the dough (5-8 minutes) until it is not sticky anymore. (I added sprinklings of flour to help when it was too sticky.)
- Shape dough into a ball and place in a bowl. Cover with a cloth and let the dough rise (10 minutes) to double in size.
- Add flour to surface and work dough flat. Shape into a loaf by folding the dough. Place into greased loaf pan and sprinkle powder on top.
- Cover with cloth and allow to rise for 1 hour.
- Pre-heat oven to 177°C or 350°F.
- Bake for 25 minutes.
- Butter top of bread with margarine/butter to prevent it getting hard.
I want to mention that I did add five minutes to the oven time because I thought it didn’t look golden enough. However, when the bread got cold, the crust was a bit harder than I would have liked. Inside remained nice and soft though, so if you’re tempted to add more time, I would say don’t.
I was also worried about not having parchment paper but the greased pan was good enough. The Bread slid right out when I turned the pan over.
As you can see guys, I think my first attempt at baking bread was bomb. I’ll definitely be doing this again since I can’t shop as fast as bread goes in my house, and I’m not even a lover of bread like that. Sometime our house passes trough two to three loaves and I didn’t touch any.
Anyway guys. National bakery nuh good again! LOL! If you are more visual, my vlog has the process more in detail. As my kitchen is tiny, I couldn’t record every step, but it’s enough I think to give you an idea of how to go about it.
