What is Blogger Burnout? Tips to Avoid It

Blogger burnout is real, and I thought this post was fitting, given how many of us are busy trying to crank our 25 posts in 25 days. In my case, I write in several aspects of my life. I have to be particularly careful what projects I am taking on. Between writers block, creative block and blogger burnout, I’m on a tight lash. A post I wrote a few months ago highlighted some Jamaican Bloggers Who Are Active in 2021. I mentioned how hard it is for a reader to come across good blogs that are regularly updated.

That is partly since blogger burnout can set in, effectively zapping all your creative juice no matter how creative you are. Itā€™s a little like writerā€™s block, but itā€™s more complicated.

Anyone whoā€™s blogged consistently over months, weeks and years knows that writing is only half the work if you run a blog. The effort required to keep content fresh and relevant to your niche is no small task. There is research, coming up with angles, titles, relevant images, etc. It is tedious. It requires dedication and commitment.

When you’ve done all that work, seeing the results from your hard work is something you look forward to and it doesn’t happen overnight. For some bloggers, it never happens at all. Some bloggers will fight through it. Some give up.

What is Blogger Burnout?

When actions fail to produce the sparkly results all initial bloggers think will follow them as long as they do the work, the blogger will become frustrated, tired and disillusioned with blogging. That is known as blogger burnout.

Blogginā€™ Ainā€™t Easy

It requires research for topics, keywords, SEO, marketing, interaction within the space and community, and the mechanics of maintaining a fully functional website.

…over 2.5 billion blog posts are being published each year worldwide. Thatā€™s 6,912,000 blog posts published per day, and 4,800 blog posts published each minute. (2021, Internet Live Stats)

There are estimates of more than 600 million blogs on the internet in 2021, but only a fraction of them are updated annually. Indeed, a great many of them are inactive due to blogger burnout leading to abandonment.

Tips to Prevent and Treat Blogger Burnout

1. Take Breaks

When you blog, especially when you love it, it’s easy to want to spend every single day working on your blog even just for a little while. When you start to feel drained and lacking creativity, take a step back. I know, I know. That sounds like blog suicide. But it can work if you do it right. Think about writing some posts in advance and scheduling them to go out over a longer period. For example, if you blog once a week, you could update your audience and put out posts once every two weeks. That buys you a month.

2. Write When inspired

When good ideas come, log them. Write the posts, or start them. Sometimes even if it’s just the title you will find that having a draft to go back to when you’re running low on ideas can be a lifesaver.

3. Manage Your Expectations

The goal is always to grow a successful blog, but stats rise and fall all the time. A lull in traffic isn’t always and indictment of your efforts. Despite the importance of analytics, try to be realistic about what you will be able to achieve in a specific time frame. If your expectations are realistic

4. Separate Administrative workdays from Blogging days

Blogging is hard enough, and you might not realize it, but the administrative duties required to run your blog can become intertwined in content production. Try to separate the two as much as your can.

5. Change your Scenery

A change of pace and scenery can be especially useful to get creative juices flowing. Locking yourself away at a desk isn’t always as productive as you think. Yes, just like the corny beach and computer pictures we see on social media, give it a go. Or go out and get some fresh air and have an adventure and them come back to the computer.

Iā€™m definitely going through burnout, and the longest break in the history of blogging definitely did help. I would say the biggest thing is to write only when inspiredā€¦ in fact, I swear by it!
