Recently, I’ve been curating my wardrobe to reflect this new chapter of my life—editing, refining and rediscovering what I already own. Winter’s chill means I’m constantly swapping shoes at the door, toggling between boots and something sleeker. Indoors, I can let style take the lead, but some days, practicality wins out—or I want the freedom to choose. Packing for a recent trip, I instinctively reached for the striking pair of burgundy Tieks by Gavrieli leather ballet flats I’d been sent to review. They promised the seamless transition I craved for a conference, gliding with me from city streets to lecture halls without missing a beat in structure or style.

Ballet flats never truly leave the style conversation, especially for millennials. They strike a rare balance between comfort, polish and practicality. A thoughtfully made pair can carry you from workdays to weekends and from airports to dinner tables with effortless grace. But not all ballet flats are created equal. Practicality, comfort, style and durability determine whether leather ballet flats are genuinely worth the investment. Let’s talk about where these Tieks fall on the spectrum.

Why Leather Ballet Flats Remain a Staple

Leather ballet flats succeed through subtlety. They quietly anchor a thoughtfully curated wardrobe. Compared to synthetic flats, leather offers better breathability, comfort, durability and a refined look to any outfit, formal or casual.

Before diving into the details, it helps to set the bar. A leather ballet flat must offer more than just good looks. The leather quality, comfort — including ‘break-in’ time, fit, flexibility and versatility — and, for a luxury leather pair, longevity. Tieks markets itself on exactly that.

Tieks by Gavrieli

Tieks by Gavrieli ballet flats are a premium, all-in-one solution for style and practicality, emphasizing comfort, flexibility, durability and portability. The brand highlights its use of high-quality Italian leather and a split-sole design that allows the shoes to fold compactly for travel while still providing structure and support. I tested them against all their markers and mine.

First Impressions

Leather flats fill a need for professionals who want polish without heels, travellers who prioritize comfort and packability, creators who need camera-ready footwear and anyone building a capsule wardrobe. As for packaging, the flats come in a small rectangular, compact box in Tieks blue, an aquamarine colour that aptly conveys luxury. The package communicates a high-end purchase. You can spot a well-made leather flat right away. The leather feels luxuriously supple, the construction intentional. There’s nothing flimsy or hurried about it. The shoes are non-elasticized, padded in the heel and cushioned.

One thing that intrigued me about the Tieks by Gavrieli flats is the split sole. They are non-slip, carry the signature Tieks Blue (present regardless of the colour), and I was super excited because that means I can fold them away in a cute tote without tugging a large shoe bag around. Speaking of folding away, the package includes a nylon pouch and a tote to store heels. I am in love with the pouch; the tote, absolutely not.

Comfort and All-Day Wear

Comfort is the true test where leather ballet flats either earn their keep or are set aside. The Tieks have all the marks of a good pair: they feel comfortable for desk work and standing meetings and hold up for walking after several hours. The split sole means there isn’t much arch support. However, they provide lift. When I wear other flats, I feel everything under my feet, like pebbles, which is uncomfortable. The raised split soles provide greater comfort, so this wasn’t an issue with the Tieks.

For travel, this is especially important. The flats fold, pack easily, and still look polished on arrival. They fit seamlessly in my carry-on corners, taking up little space. I found that a big plus, especially for short trips.

Versatility

For travel, this is especially important. The flats fold, pack easily and still looked polished on my arrival. They fit seamlessly in my carry-on corners, taking up very little space. I found that to be a very big plus, especially for short trips.

The flats met my need for a professional look I could dress up or down for polish without heels, particularly for travellers who prioritize comfort and packability, and for a creator who needs camera-ready footwear as I build my capsule wardrobe.

Tieks by Gavrieli Fit and Sizing

I usually fall between a 7 and 7.5 in US sizing. Some brands’ 7.5 fits, others feel too roomy. Since Tieks skip half sizes, I chose a 7, knowing leather stretches with wear, and an 8 is always too large for me. After wearing the shoes and feeling how much they give during wear, I would size up to an 8 for the next pair. I’m not sure they wouldn’t be too big, though.

I’ve found that they do not rub my feet at all. The Tieks run true to size and mould comfortably to my narrow feet. The leather relaxed a bit over several wears. I anticipate it will stretch with more wear. I’ll include an update on this as warmer weather approaches and more opportunities to wear them.

Colour

Colour plays a starring role. Neutrals like black, nude or navy anchor your wardrobe, while richer shades—especially chocolate brown or burgundy flats—feel elevated, subtle and photograph beautifully. The burgundy colour is bright and vibrant, completing the look.

Value

At upwards of $200 per pair, they are priced as lifestyle luxury, a statement piece. Leather ballet flats sit in an interesting pricing category. They’re not luxury in the fashion-house sense, but priced above fast-fashion alternatives, which makes them a good fit for my wardrobe.

The real value, though, lies in the cost per wear. If you wear flats multiple times a week, travel frequently and/or prefer a streamlined wardrobe, then a well-made leather ballet flat often makes sense financially and practically. This is where investment flats prove their worth as they outlast several cheaper pairs and age with far more grace.

Final Verdict on Tieks by Gavrieli Ballet Flats

Leather ballet flats are worth the investment when quality is there. Tieks by Gavrieli leather ballet flats have earned their place in my closet as an intentionally curated piece. A wardrobe built around intention rather than excess, they earn their place. They are functional, refined and quietly powerful—the kind of piece that whispers luxury while delivering ease, confidence and lasting value. They are easy to clean, easy to carry and comfortable.
