Would you believe me if I told you that in 2019 when most people hear the phrase ‘business plan’ they think of a frumpy old word document 50 pages long buried deep in a dark file room, with no other purpose but to collect dust? I often mention the fact that most brands nowadays compete in the global market. As the internet and communication technologies become more advanced, access to new markets and customer bases have become the norm. This access comes with its own set of challenges. More brands accessing more markets mean stiffer competition, more noise (communication) and inevitably smaller market shares.
Creativity in Business Planning
So, what does any of this have to do with your business plan and creativity? Stiffer competition means that have to find ever-evolving and innovative ways to solve customer problems. Hence, creativity. Lack of development and failure to adopt creativity and innovation as part of their business model has killed more businesses than any of us care to imagine.
Creativity can flourish in any aspect of business planning, and most assuredly, it should be reflected in your business plan. Seek unconventional (and effective, obviously) ways to enhance and project a competitive edge.
In what areas should you consider doing a creative business plan? Consider these areas;
Convenience
Our generation is driven a need for instant gratification. We want everything at our fingertips. The faster and easier, the better. Has a customer ever asked for an inconvenient
Customer Experience
Now more than ever, customers have choices. One way to capture and keep market share with the application of creativity in delivering a unique customer experience. Helping customers feel valued can go a long way with business retention.

Put Money in Your Customer’s Pocket
This doesn’t always translate to giving away money. You can do this by offering discounts, bundling products/services or simply providing a more cost effective alternative to substitute products. The point is, suss out creative ways to help your customers feel they are saving or getting the best value for their money.
Creative Business Plan Presentation
And finally, it’s pointless if the creativity never sees the document and presentation. Add colors, tell a story, use a theme, add images, etc.
This list isn’t exhaustive. There are many ways to incorporate some creativity in your business planning process.
